The UPI-based WhatsApp Payments feature was introduced in India in a test phase last month. The feature is currently available on the stable version v2.18.31 on iOS and is also available on the WhatsApp beta v2.18.75 on Android. WhatsApp now offers a Notify button for users that have not created a WhatsApp payment account as of now. So, when someone tries to send them a payment, they can receive it once they have set up UPI on WhatsApp. The new placement of the Send to UPI ID feature was first spotted by a Twitter user.

How to enable WhatsApp UPI payments

The new Send to UPI ID feature can be accessed by going into the WhatsApp app’s Settings. Just head to Setting and there you will see Payments and after tapping on it tap on Send Payment > Send to UPI ID on top of the contacts list. You can then enter the unique UPI ID of the recipient to whom you want to transfer money. Previously, users would first have to send a payment via a chat thread on WhatsApp using the Attach button. Also, if the recipient didn’t have a WhatsApp payment account, the sender would then be shown the option to send it to a UPI ID directly. So, this whole process isn’t required anymore now. WhatsApp Payments is Facebook’s first attempt at digital payments foray in India. WhatsApp Payments comes at a time when apps like Paytm and Google Tez have been introducing offers to increase their users.
