Physical Overview

The Gear S2 has just the right size, comparable to a regular watch. As mentioned above, the best thing about the gear S is the rotating bezel, which is cleverly optimized with the software and clicks every time you rotate it. Besides, because of the large footprint, it is more comfortable to operate as compared to Apple Watch’s crown.  You can also use the touch screen for interacting with the OS. The straps are user removable and replaceable. Samsung mentioned that third party vendors will be making straps for Gear S2. On the rear side, you will find the customary heart rate sensor. A microphone is present on the side, flanked by ‘Home’ and ‘Back’ button. The watch is IP68 certified, which means you don’t have to worry about rain and splashes. On the rear side, a heart rate sensor is present. Gear S2 can also monitor your activities using different sensors housed inside. Samsung has also included NFC and wireless charging.

User Interface

Samsung Gear S2 is running Tizen OS, BUT it will still be compatible with all Android 4.4+ Kitkat phones with 1.5GB+ RAM. Use of Tizen is understandable as the rotating bezel needs to be optimized with the software. The Tizen OS on Gear S2 felt beautiful and intuitive. In the beginning we were a bit cynical about the watch not running Android Wear (which now works with iOS too), but after our initial preview, we don’t think users would mind Tizen OS one bit.

More than 20 cool watch faces are preloaded on the device. As for apps, Samsung says more than a 1000 apps will be available in store from day one, which can take advantage of the spinning bezel.

Competition

The Gear S2 is an apt Apple Watch competitor. It will also be challenged by new Moto 360 and Moto 360 Sport, which will be available in India very soon.

Price and Availability

Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic, will globally roll out starting October this year. As per initial reports the Gear S2 will cost 349 Euros ( 26K INR approx) and the Gear S2 classic will be priced at 399 Euros (30K Approx).

Conclusion

Gear S2 is undoubtedly the best Samsung Smartwatch till date. If Samsung’s claims of 2-3 days of battery backup hold water, this could be the most appealing smartwatch we have come across so far.
